Alan's Monday Morning Memo

There is nothing at all wrong with running a small business. Heck, I run one and so do most of you! But there is something wrong with having a small mind. I was in a cigar club the other day and asked why there weren’t more matches in the room. “Because the customers keep stealing them,” I was told! I’ve had it with the affectation of not placing salt on a restaurant table, or not bringing cream when the server …

DASM: University Orthopedics

My latest Dumb Ass Stupid Management Award goes to Dr. Manuel Dasilva and University Orthopedics, here in East Greenwich, RI. I had an appointment for a problem with my hand. At 11:30, the appointed time, I was shown into a small examining room. At 11:50, I poked my head out and asked a woman, “How much longer will it be?” She replied, “I don’t know, I just came back on from break.” Surly. She then returned to tell me, “At …

Leaning Crazy

I’ve been in Munich and Hamburg for a few days, and the only English-speaking television is CNN, MSNBC, and Bloomberg. They are 90% business news, and they are all insane. They cover abstruse and obscure market movements, and hypothesize all day long about issues which they examine from nine sides and have no real bearing on anything. Sometimes it’s like listening to Swahili, and I’ll turn to a German channel which is more comprehensible than the insane business chatter and …

Adventures in Germany

• I returned to enter the meeting room while my partner, Matt, was running the program. A manager in the hall stopped me and said, “That meeting is already in session, are you sure you’re in the right place?” I pointed to the picture of me on the wall with the meeting name.  He did a triple take. “You are so much better looking in person, sir,” he said as he opened the door for me. • I told one …

Breakfast Is Not Included

At my hotel in Hamburg the woman at the desk specified that breakfast was not included in my room rate. I ignored that and asked if I could upgrade to a suite in any case (I hadn’t made the original reservation). She found one and promptly informed me that breakfast was now included. When she escorted me to the room, she carefully explained that the water in the room was included in the rate. So was the wifi. But accessing …

Alan's Monday Morning Memo

I‘m fairly sensitive to whether we’re trying to “take” or tryng to “make.” When I managed huge, international sales forces, some members would come to me whining that quotas were unfair or their territories required exceptions to expectations. Others found ways to make the unusual happen and gain unprecedented results. Some wanted me to give them some excuse for not performing (or help in performing), while others focused on finding and implementing approaches to excel. I finally put a sign …

These Are A Few of My Favorite Things

• A woman takes issue with one of my weekly Monday Morning Memos—a FREE newsletter—and tells me that if I don’t write more consistently with her point of view, she’ll cancel her subscription. (She had been reading it for over a year.) • A man writes a venomous email because I wrote a column in a FREE newsletter about the special nature of my mornings in Nantucket. He wrote that if I can’t provide him with ideas to improve his …
