Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 03/13/17

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 03/13/17

After an entire week of successful meetings with clients in New York City, accompanied by great food and wine at top restaurants, Maria and I had Friday night to ourselves and decided to see Spamilton (the spoof of Hamilton, which is hugely funny). It plays in a small theater on 72nd, so we wound up having dinner in a diner on Amsterdam Avenue. It had traditional booths, faded photos of celebrities on the walls—and was spotless.

The owner or manager, clad with apron, came over to the door, welcomed us and said, “Here’s good table” (it was at the window, great people-watching). The menu had at least 300 items representing a dozen ethnicities. Maria had egg salad, I had grilled cheese with bacon (and with two diet cokes that was $34). The owner came over occasionally to see how we were doing and shoot the breeze, all the while greeting additional customers. (I watched in fascination as a “kneeling bus” pulled up at the curb, a man in a motorized cart expertly backed in on an extended ramp, and then drove down the aisle to a space. The entire procedure took 60 seconds.)

The diner owner took great pride in his place which, I suspect, was open 24 hours a day. The service and food were excellent, the atmosphere convivial. That’s what happens when you take pride in work that you love. (I saw the bus driver smile as he watched his passenger glide by.)

You can wake up looking at the inevitable imperfections all around you and believe we’re lost. Or you can look at the opportunities all around you and believe we can help find the way. It’s our choice. It’s really as simple—and rewarding—as egg salad and grilled cheese.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
