Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/20/17

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/20/17

Jefferson once said something like, “In matters of taste, swim with the tide. In matters of principle, stand like a rock.” I’m seeing a lot of rocks lately. This is why I’m fascinated by the recent sale of the Leonardo work for $450 million. Fortuitously, I’m two-thirds of the way through Isaacson’s massive and wonderful biography of Leonardo and his discussion of the provenance of “Salvator Mundi” (Saviour of the World).

Most experts feel it’s actually Leonardo’s work, but some think it’s the work of his students. There are logical points on both sides once you read Isaacson’s detailed descriptions of how Leonardo painted (very few of his paintings were ever completed, he was notorious for abandoning them). One wag observed that the price paid simply demonstrates that “some people have way too much money”!

We pay for what pleases us (albeit the buyer here may feel it’s an investment). One person’s idea of art, or location, or food, or entertainment may differ radically from another’s. I love roller coasters, uni, and science fiction. I don’t expect you to join me in those pursuits necessarily, but I also don’t expect you to draw negative conclusions from them just because you don’t share them.

We need to accommodate varied tastes and, more importantly, develop friends and colleagues with varied tastes and perspectives. Too many of us tend to not only restrict ourselves to those who share common principles, but also common tastes.

In which case we’re merely breathing our own exhaust.

Being happy is a matter of personal taste. —Pierre Tellhard de Chardin
