One of my clients reminded me last week that I had neglected to place a 2019 meeting on my online calendar! These are exciting times for me. I determine where I go and when, and I have a global clientele.

I’ve found that the critical factors are control and leverage. Control what you can—which is more than you think—and gain leverage to exploit the positive aspects of your life. I learned long ago when working in a consulting firm, even as a top officer, that true wealth only arrives when you own what you do.

Taxes are one metric of success. It’s a pleasant problem to owe them. (I love anarchists and tax resistors—who on earth would pave the roads, police the streets, deliver the mail?)

Harry Cohn, who founded Columbia Pictures and ran the studio as a fiefdom, said, “He who eats my bread sings my song.” In other words, if someone else is paying you, they have control over you. That’s why our world of entrepreneurialism, which most of you share with me, is such a wonderful aspect of our society. With some talent and courage (and we must have the courage of our talent), we can claim the greatest wealth of all—control over our own time.

Write your own music, sing your own song. It doesn’t matter so much who’s listening, it only matters that you enjoy the music.
