Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/09/15

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/09/15

We haven’t heard about “high tech, high touch” for a while (Megatrends by John Naisbitt), but it’s truer now than ever. Searching for boosts for my home wireless system on the internet, I was being advised in automated Q&A sites to spend $5,000 for rewiring. But wandering into Best Buy, a helpful clerk showed me how Airport Express could do it for $100. I get online diagnoses of my car, but I feel better talking to the service advisor. Most upscale hotel rooms have complex technology—I wind up calling the concierge about my TV, the internet, and even the light systems.

I can track my flight on the computer screen at my seat, but I’d rather hear the captain explain the flight plan and any potential turbulence. I despise the iPads in restaurants with the wine list on them, I want to talk to a sommelier or even a knowledgeable server.

This is why I’m astounded when someone sends a request by email when they could have called me and made personal contact. I don’t ever want a robot as a pet. I want a dog that gallops across the grass with me.

It isn’t winning is so great. It’s just that losing is so awful
— Henry David Thoreau
