The bromide is that “anyone can make an error” or “it could happen to anyone.”
I’ve noticed a different phenomenon. When I receive requests for some kind of dispensation (I missed the deadline, but; I don’t really qualify, but; I know there are no refunds, but….) they are overwhelmingly from the same people. These are the people who are positive you never sent something which is inevitably in their spam folder; or who want to be able to come late and leave early; or who want some discount or favor they’re not entitled to claim.
It’s predictable. And they’re enabled every time someone agrees to treat them as an exception. So, in order to help them out, I’m not allowing the exception (not the least of which it’s unfair to everyone else who manage to follow the instructions and abide by the rules).
