Is There Consulting Potential Out There? Oh Yeah….

Here are some of the issues that major, for-profit organizations are facing today. These are gathered from my various communities, mentoring, ongoing client work, and trends seen in business publications. They are in random order.

• Productivity after cuts, resource reductions, and freezes.
• Retaining key customers and clients.
• Maintaining client service with fewer resources.
• Complaints about outsourcing, particularly overseas service lines.
• Managing cash flow, credit lines, receivables, accounts payable.
• Using technology efficiently, not only effectively; ROI on technology.
• Market share in competitive markets; value vs. price competition.
• Branding, consumer loyalty, word-of-mouth, reputation.
• Employee loyalty, commitment, and innovation.
• Reduction in costs while providing equal or better service levels.
• Pragmatic strategies that can be implemented short-term.
• Non-financial reward systems.
• Adherence with regulatory, audit, and ethical criteria.
• Objective, firm evaluations of performance.
• Global presence and penetration; sales beyond borders.
• Being viewed as environmentally friendly, sustaining, “green.”
• Successfully managing press and media relationships and image.
• Employee theft.
• Reducing customer theft: inappropriate returns, complaints, etc.
• Lowering costs of acquisition.
• Evolving a work force which mirrors the customer demographics.
• Being attractive to investors; pleasing shareholders.
• Finding and appointing high quality board members.
• Succession planning and “bench strength” with reduced staff.
• Collaborating with and managing external venders and resources.
• Rapid product commercialization.
• Creating, disseminating, and exploiting knowledge internally.
• Rapid problem solving and avoidance of repetitive problems.
• Decisions made once and avoidance of failure work.
• A bias for action over planning, meetings, and analysis.
• Making tough and often painful decisions about people.

Some of these vary by industry, but surely you have the value, competence, inclination, and passion to address many of these issues.

This is a great time to be a consultant if you find people who have the ability to pay for your value, and you can demonstrate dramatic and rapid ROI.

Someone to Edit Audio Presentation

I need someone to listen to a three-hour audio presentation recorded live, and note where there are editing needs by the minute. For example, we need to cut out the dead air during exercises or breaks and so forth. I’ll give their detailed notes to my audio guy for editing and then duplication. I’ll provide an editing credit on the eventual product and $500 in cash or $1,000 toward any future workshop as a credit. I’ll ship the three CDs and would like them back with clear notes by elapsed time in two weeks. Any takers?

Thanks,

Alan

My second choice would be someone who has developed a training program of some kind from scratch in partnership with a large client organization with the goal of having such a program sold as a for-profit service by the organization outside the organization.

My third choice would be someone who has developed any program from scratch in partnership with a large client organization with the goal of having such a program delivered either in-house and/or outside the organization.

In all cases, my goal is to get some idea of how long it took to complete the work so that I might estimate how long mine might take. It would be great if I could speak with this individual no later than end of day Wednesday (December 10). They may contact me at (403) 609-9939, ext. 201. Many thanks.

Workshop Opportunity

American Press Institute is looking for a speaker to lead a three-hour session on essential communication skills for new managers in the newspaper industry. The session is part of API’s upcoming seminar, “New Managers’ Survival Guide ,” Nov. 17-20, 2008, in Reston, Va. This essential seminar is for newly appointed managers across the organization as well as those being groomed for management positions and managers with no formal leadership development. Participants will gain a “big picture” understanding of their role within the organization and learn how to build and manage a highly functioning team.

This two-part session offers practical tips for enhancing communication skills. It will help prepare news organization managers for today’s complex and competitive business landscape where lucid, effective communication is essential. The ability to communicate successfully—to speak, write and listen expertly—will help participants gain greater professional recognition and will enable them to achieve powerful results.

This session is scheduled on Tuesday morning, Nov. 18, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Here are my thoughts on the content of the sessions.

Part 1: Conversational Skills That Get Attention and Gain Credibility
How well managers communicate can make or break their professional image. It’s more than what you say – it’s how you say it. Participants will learn how to:
§ Influence how others view their work, performance…even technical skill sets

§ Optimize communication skills they already have
Improve work relationships and reduce misunderstandings
Choose the right words even in difficult circumstances
Sharpen presentation skills to deliver a message that is both clear and appropriate to any audience

Part 2: Writing More Effective E-mails, Letters, Memos & Reports
In today’s busy workplaces, managers must be able to communicate with clarity and conciseness in written communication. In this session, participants will get the business writing skills they need for delivering information powerfully, persuasively and professionally.

API will pay travel, one night’s lodging at the Hyatt Regency Reston hotel and a modest honorarium. API is the newspaper industry’s premier executive development center, located 20 miles west of Washington, D.C. For more on information, please go to www.americanpressinstitute.org

If you are interested in this opportunity, I would be happy to discuss it by phone at your earliest convenience.
