DASM: Not All Rides Are the Same

DASM: Not All Rides Are the Same

I am not making this up.

I arranged through the concierge of the W Times Square Hotel to have a car pick me up at Penn Station and take me on some errands and then to the hotel. The driver was from India. His accent was so thick that he was unintelligible. I couldn’t find him outside the train station because he seemed to say he was in mid-block when he was at the end of the block. I’d tell him to pick me up at 58 and Fifth, and he’d drive down 58th looking for me, past Fifth.

After all of this wasted time, he turns down 47th to go to the hotel, and is promptly pulled over by a cop for an illegal turn. I began wondering if he could even read English. The cop and he weren’t communicating, so I asked if I could leave the car. The cop said fine, so I took my luggage, briefcase, and purchases and walked four blocks to the hotel.

It was a mild day and wasn’t raining. I counted myself fortunate.

This car company no doubt needs drivers and isn’t too fussy so long as you have a license, but guess what this trip cost them.

Uber works pretty well in Manhattan. Stick a pin on the map, get a driver with 4 or 5 star reviews.

I’m well aware. But the hotel provided a car for me through their service which waits for my arrival and I didn’t have to wait for Uber.
