Driving

Driving

I’ve driven a lot of exotic cars and I own three at the moment. What I’ve learned along the way is that once you drive them a couple of times, they are simply your cars. There’s always a pleasure for me, and an appreciation of every moment, but the cars become quite natural and familiar, as they should. They’re in my garage, not a museum.

The same holds true for any experience. If you just view it from afar, or listen to someone else’s journey, the experience remains remote and mysterious. Once you try it, it’s incorporated into your own background and knowledge base. You may accept it or reject it in the future, but you know what it is and don’t have to rely on others—or be afraid of it.

That applies to tasting uni, visiting Bali, ordering a custom-designed suit, public speaking, or marketing to a large corporation. You may or may not like it, but you can stop relying on others telling you about it and, most importantly, you can stop being afraid of it.
