Gabriel Kreuther: Dining Review

Gabriel Kreuther: Dining Review

When we asked the concierge at the Baccarat for a good pre-theater restaurant we’ve never tried, she told us there was a terrific French restaurant on West 42nd. A good French restaurant on West 42nd?! Seriously?

We’re adventurous and wound up at Gabriel Kreuther, a fantastic space with plenty of room (as opposed to the packed Le Bernadin, for example) and an open kitchen where 15 chefs were preparing their tasting menu. And, yes, we had a four-course tasting menu with some other delights and arrived at our theater (for War Paint) by 7:40.

The food and service are excellent, which included at least a dozen different people providing various services at the table. Joe, the executive chef who came out to chat, is from Daniel and the Culinary Institute of Florida. He showed us our rack of lamb, which is cooked in hay and wrapped in cedar.

Gabriel Kreuther is open for lunch and dinner all week, and I’d strongly recommend you try it if you like French food (who doesn’t?). It reminds me of the Queen Mary, insofar as they seem to have two employees for every customer!
And you have to love a restaurant that refills your wine glass without asking and without charging….
