If I Only Had A Brain….

If I Only Had A Brain….

The New York Giants football team, in a horrible slump, has benched Eli Manning, the quarterback, who has previously won two Super Bowls. The Cleveland Browns, who are zero for the 21st Century, keep juggling their lineups and coaches.

Does it occur to anyone that long-term problems are the result of poor decisions made by the general management and owners? GE recently forced out their CEO before his tenure would have been up because they were unhappy with performance. They have investors to worry about.

When you retain the people making the poor strategic decisions, you inevitably get poor strategy. It’s unconscionable that a team, or a business, can remain terrible over long periods, unless the people who control it are terrible over long periods.

Until the Browns are sold to people with better strategic skills, the local skunks will continue their protest that the Browns are stinking up the place. And until the Giants are sold to someone with a brain their current coaching staff and unmotivated players will continue to get comfortable in the basement.

That’s how it’s been with Chicago sports. The Cubs didn’t win the World Series for 108 years under combined Wrigley/Tribune corporate ownership. Now, the Ricketts family bought them and they won.

The Blackhawks started winning after the owner died and his son took over.

The Bears continually underperform under the McCaskey family.
