Look At Me, I’m Lovely

Look At Me, I’m Lovely

There’s a wonderful song from “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” that includes the ingenue singing, “Look at me, I’m lovely.” She has a point, of course, but it’s a bit too much like listening to Donald Trump.

Mensa has a monthly magazine, and as I gawk at the letters to the editor, I hear a refrain, “Look at me, I’m gifted” wafting through the room. Here are just three excerpts from the current batch of letters. I am not making this up.

“I propose the creation of a National Mensa Pride Day…..Dig out your Mensa pin, T-shirt, coffee mug, or whatever you have and display it on that day. Come out into the light and them them see that we are just like them—sort of.”

“I have been personally making up words all my life. If it gets the point across, it’s a word. All words are made up. If everyone waited for them to be in the dictionary, there wouldn’t be any words or dictionaries.”

“I had let my membership lapse some years ago, but then I heard two very accomplished trial lawyers comment favorably that another attorney was a member of Mensa—with obvious respect and maybe a little envy.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

Word. (It’s in the dictionary.)

That did make me chuckle Alan.
I think everyone makes words up though, especially after a beer or four.
And they can usually be found in the dictionary – if you’re prepared to look of each syllable on a different page.

But Tim, what are you suggesting?
Are you saying that the Loch Ness Monster is NOT real?
    Nooooooooooooo
I’ve seen photos! That’s REAL LIVE evidence! To some people.
And…and…and…I have a friend who has an uncle who knew this bloke that once bought a strawberry patch from a farmer who lived near the Loch who saw it once. On a foggy morning. When it was dark. And raining. And he SWEARS that this is true….

    Alan,

Aren’t these the same people who still believe in the Loch Ness Monster?

Well, the magazine may need to present the org in a certain light, and promote pride. As any member of Mensa knows, there are many different types of intelligence, and sadly, social IQ (EQ?) seems to be a bit lower in this group.

It’s pretty sad when a magazine purportedly for high intelligence has to promote pride!

I’d love to Tim, however my money is tied up in a fantastic purchase I’ve just made in Pisa, Italy. It’s an old building and needs some foundation work doing, but it’s a nice ‘fixer upper’ and has lots of selling potential. Or so I’ve been told.
Anyway, I’m just waiting for the deeds to come through, they should arrive this week. After all I handed the money over a fortnight ago.
    What a buy.
    I can’t believe my luck.

    Hey John,

I have a few toll boths for sale on both the Mass and New Jersey turnpike that I can sell you for reasonable money.

You two are definitely Mensa material.
