Taxi!

Taxi!

I don’t use Uber in London because the taxis are so good—plentiful, roomy, safe, clean, and driven by drivers who know where everything is, never talk on cell phones or eat while driving, and are extremely polite. In other words, the antitheses of the fetid, horrid, New York taxis.

I grabbed one after my speech at the Institute of Directors to get to dinner with colleagues in what should have been a ten-minute trip. Instead it took twenty—London traffic, winding through narrow streets, is awful. At the restaurant, the fare was fifteen pounds. The driver said, and I am not making this up, “Sir, that took far too long, the traffic was dreadful, let’s make it ten pounds.”

I took five seconds to comprehend this, and offered, “Well, how about two for you and we’ll make it twelve?”

“That’s very decent of you, sir,” he said, and made my change.

I don’t think my dinner companions all believed the story, but it’s good to  know that manners and civility and generosity can exist in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

Are you making that happen in your life and work?
