The Power of the Shore

The Power of the Shore

The garage door opens to a temperature of 70 degrees at 7 am, a briny air, a crisp stillness. A cat wanders by, its night’s work completed, seeking some sleep. I drive through deserted streets, obeying the obsessive traffic lights with no traffic in sight. Mechanics are adjusting rides powered up with invisible riders on the boardwalk.

City workers empty meters guarded by an armed officer, but they take time out to spread the food they brought with them for the swans and geese and ducks. The birds must wonder why their food is so well protected.

I buy the newspapers at the ShopRite and the lone cashier carefully counts my change, says, “Thank you,” and “Have a wonderful day,” and when I wish her the same, she says, “Thank you,” once again. I’m the only customer in the donut shop where the “donut robot” machine makes them in front of my eyes and a clerk is armed with 100 toppings. I can’t make the decision, so she does.

I return and back into the garage between my daughter’s car and a stone pillar with four inches of leeway on each side. Then I head to the beach outside the house, usually I’m the first one settled, and immediately go into the water, look to the horizon as I’ve done for decades, and wonder what’s next.
