Vienna (Again)

Vienna (Again)

Vienna has about 300 churches, and like Germany, the residents are subject to a tax to support the church under certain conditions. I think it’s one percent of income. If you don’t pay the tax in Austria, you cannot get married by a priest or have one serve at your funeral. I imagine at a certain point there may be quite a few back taxes paid.

Vienna is a wonderful, cosmopolitan city of over a million, with gorgeous old structures from the Hapsburg empire often staring at more modern horror stories. We saw the famed Lipizzaner Stallions in their stables, in the middle of town.

What has fascinated me is the German/Austrian antipathy, at least as expressed by a half-dozen professional guides. Aside from the minor (they think their cathedral in larger, but ours really is if you include the annex), it strikes me that the Germans think the Austrians are slackers and the Austrians think the Germans are fanatics. The Germans boast of their efficiency, and the Austrians boast of their layback attitude.

If Bavaria is to Germany what Texas is to the U.S., perhaps Austria is to Germany what Canada is to the U.S. Except no one here is apologizing.

Well put! Germany and Austria are both beautiful and similar in many ways. The antipathy you mention is real for some people but more like a running gag for others, especially the younger generation. The Germans (or “Piefkes” as Austrians call them) are an extremely important source of revenue via tourism, so the Austrians hate and love them at the same time. It is said that the Austrians are still working out a way to make the Germans send their tourist money without actually coming to the country. Enjoy your time there, Alan, and make sure to try a Germknödel while you’re in Austria!
