When the Cause Can Become A New Problem

When the Cause Can Become A New Problem

Many “causes” start with legitimate grievances, protests agains unfair conditions, and roots in social justice. However, too many become clichéd groups, replete with acronyms and chants. They then morph into funded, sponsored, formal organizations, usually losing the early creators and attracting people who have very different agendas from the original intent. And then some of them deteriorate into selfish, personal agendas of the leadership at the time.

Longshoreman/philosopher Eric Hoffer said once something like this: A cause becomes a movement which becomes a business which turns out to be a racket.

I don’t know if I’m that cynical, and he said it better than I, but there’s plenty of evidence supporting this.
