Whoops!

Whoops!

A  dangerous convict, shackled in the back of a police car for transport, nevertheless is able to choke the police officer driving the car, cause  a crash, grab his gun, force him to unshackle him, then take his cell phone and money and disable the car’s radio. There was no partition between the officer and the prisoner, and no second officer in the car.

Now, what could go wrong with that?

You can buy every flak jacket, piece of weaponry, and camera in the world, but they don’t replace human judgment which, in this case, was execrable.

You can’t buy judgment. No matter how successful your clients are in the market, they need your judgment as an expert outsider to succeed still more. Most of us would have taken one look at that transport system, knowing nothing of police work, and said, “This is a disaster waiting to happen.”

Look around.

It’s absolutely shocking at times when I observe something in a Board meeting, or Executive Team meeting and ask a basic question, let’s say about the purpose of what’s going on, and I get a response of amazement. Then the discussion begins. Perspectives on what the team is doing and why are shared. And finally all agree to approach this repetitive activity differently.

One time it was the CFO report to the Physician Board of a model ACO. No sooner did my question get out on the table when several voices blurred out , I’ve been wondering thing same thing for quite a while!

When much later I asked the Board what they found helpful in my attendance as an ex-officio Board member. One of the best answers I got which I will never forget and frequently remind myself of was, “I just like the way you think!”

Alan, you are so right. We often forget or take for granted our most valuable offering. A different perspective.

Alan your perspective on this business has been enourmously helpful throughout the years.
