A Modest Plan

A Modest Plan

Well, it’s December 28 and some of you are feeling guilty that you’re not working very much at the moment. Some of you are trying to “justify” inactivity with the rubric that “no one is around over the holidays.” And some of you just don’t know what to do with yourselves until January 2.

I’ll give you an hour’s exercise (and the more honest you are, the shorter it will be).

  1. Write down those results and circumstances from this past year that were better than you would have expected. These might be relationships, business outcomes, leisure time, expense reduction, health improvements, and so forth.
  2. Write down the causes. Was is discipline, advice, coaching, time management, hard work? Be specific.
  3. Write down those results and circumstances from this past year that were worse than you would have expected. See the categories above.
  4. Write down the causes. See the categories above.
  5. Write down what you will do to extend, exploit, and and extrapolate the items in category #2.
  6. Write down what you will to do extinguish, eliminate, and eradicate the items in category #4.
  7. Place your actions in categories #5 and #6 someplace where you’ll have to see them daily.

That wasn’t so difficult, was it? Now you’ve done a great deal, so enjoy your time between now and January 2.
