Dig We Must

Dig We Must

Con Ed, the huge New York City utility, is constantly digging up ancient pipes and wires underneath Manhattan. In the middle of a million cars they used to prop up a sign: “Dig we must….for a greater New York.” I thought that was brilliant PR.

Every day at the beach I watch grown me dig in the sand. Women seldom dig, and kids don’t dig with any conviction or long-term interest. They dig for the old man, until they can slip away.

Some of these guys dig huge holes, and some complex fortresses, but they’re all basically excavations with the intent of trapping or averting the inevitable ocean from trespassing. It is, needless to say, a persistently futile endeavor.

Yet, dig they must. I wonder if it’s their way of just temporarily controlling nature, taking a stand against the endless siege of the ocean. Or is it to test their ingenuity in finally creating a bastion against the oncoming tides, as heroic yet fruitless as a perpetual motion machine?

I asked one guy why he dug every day, with his kid yards away with the enemy, in the surf. “I don’t really know,” he confessed, “but it’s all I know how to do out here.”

The secret of life, my friends, is to know how to do a LOT of things that don’t require you fighting an uncaring, overwhelming ocean of opposition.
