The Ice Woman Cometh

The Ice Woman Cometh

I’m having drinks with Dan Gilbert in his favorite Cambridge hangout last week, and he says he’s actually looking forward to retirement some day, though he doesn’t know when. I told him I considered it an ancient artifact, and I was going to continue doing my favorite things so long as I was at the top of my game in any particular pursuit.

“How will you know you’re no longer at the top of your game?” he asked.

I explained about my heroes: That Sandy Koufax retired at the top of his game, but Frank Sinatra stayed on much too long.

“Ah, but Koufax was injured and had no real choice,” he pointed out, “and I believe Sinatra thought he WAS still at the top of his game right to the end. How will you know you’re not?” he repeated.

This was a good question, and why I like hanging with people like Dan. I repeated the quandary to my wife that evening. “How will I know when I’m not at the top of my game?”

“Don’t worry,” said Maria, “I’ll let you know.”
