Maybe I’ll Just Stay Where People Are Polite: Dumb-Ass Stupid Management

Maybe I’ll Just Stay Where People Are Polite: Dumb-Ass Stupid Management

Nassau has pre-clearance for the US, one of the relatively few places you can do this. So we went through Bahamian formalities and then Global Entry. Every Bahamian official was pleasant and friendly (as was the case arriving). The US immigration agents chatted, while they made Global Entry people wait, then we were questioned quite rudely.

You’d think, with a cushy spot like Nassau, the immigration people would be in a good mood. Why do you work in a job that you hate, unless you’re just a hateful person and find the job appealing to your personality?

I’m embarrassed for my country with this kind of nastiness. Every one of the agents was female, and usually the odd unpleasant person is male in my experience.

The expectations placed on border agents in the US are enshrined in law. They are required to treat everyone as an illegal immigrant. So their culture becomes one of questioning, suspicion and mistrust, even if you have a US passport. Having said that, I have met both rude and very pleasant border officials when travelling into your country (I’m Irish-Canadian). I’ve also found the same when re-entering Canada. It’s all down to leadership and training!
