November Elections

November Elections

My observation is this: The opposing party almost always does better in the off-year elections in the US. If the Democrats cannot take back the House of Representatives in November, it will be a larger defeat than their loss in the Presidential election. I’m taking no sides, simply making an observation.

That’s generally held true in most off-year elections with the exception of 1998 (impeachment overreach by GOP) where Democrats gained seats in the House and 2002 (post 9/11 reaction) where Republicans gained seats in the House. This year will be interesting in a lot of ways, at least here in Florida, where the environment feels very anti-incumbent and anti-middle ground. Both parties nominated gubernatorial candidates that reflect the extremes of both parties (in my opinion) but this same mood saw upsets in other state and local races…in my own community a sitting judge was defeated by a candidate without much of an agenda or campaign and even our school board races saw some defeats for incumbents. It’s going to be interesting, that’s for sure.
