Publish but Don’t Perish

Publish but Don’t Perish

You know how “It’s not what happens to you, it’s what you do about it”?

Well, a corollary: “It’s not that you have a book out, it’s what you do with it.” Stop dreaming that you’re in the book selling business or that you’ve just written War and Peace. Use the fact that a third-party publisher thought enough of your quality to invest in you, and use that to attract buyers and close business.

A book is a marketing device. I’ve written 47 original works, and with translations and newer editions they come to 64 books. Three might be considered “best-sellers” for a time, and one, Million Dollar Consulting, is in rare air, with 25 years on the shelves through five editions. Maverick is off to a great start.

But all of them were and are intended to bring me business. One of my worst selling books, on strategy, Best Laid Plans, brought in over $2 m million of strategy work.

Focus on the goal, not the instrument.
