The Drill on the Beach

The Drill on the Beach

It’s always been a hassle to get a beach umbrella properly secured so that the wind doesn’t do away with it. And, of course, strong winds are quite common on the beach.

This trip, I visited a hardware store where they sold umbrellas that had a corkscrew/drill kind of bottom, and a retractable handle on the pole which allowed me to screw this thing into the sand. Our two umbrellas were solidly affixed all week, including a vent at the top for the wind and a carrying sling that you could tote over your shoulder.

Why didn’t anyone think of that 20 years ago? I know many of you will tell me it’s been around for a while, but I first saw it this year, and I visit the beach every year.

We don’t need massive technology or breathtaking change to improve the client’s condition. We simply need low-cost, simple ideas which make life easier. Sometimes a better handle on things can do that nicely.
