Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 4/11/16

There was this funny thing about school and me—I wanted to be there. I enjoyed learning. I read all the books. I thought that’s why I was there. I didn’t cut class. What was the point? I still had plenty of free time. Some of my colleagues’ books and papers were a congeries in their room. Mine were organized and neat.

Last week I ran a program in Boston on how to change your life. We had a full house, and everyone was responsive and involved. They had paid to be there, had made the more important investment of time, and wanted to maximize their return. We had a great session.

It strikes me that, as Bob Mager used to say, “you gotta wanna.” People learn best and perform best in those conditions that make us happiest and most comfortable. Outside of the military, I don’t believe in “boot camps.” I believe in supportive environments. Yet we often don’t provde such surroundings for ourselves. For example, I’ve found 99% of all online learning “platforms” to be dull, soporific, “talking heads.” (And, some workshops are run that way in person!) Why would you pay for these? Why would you create them?

Choose venues, environments, and conditions maximally conducive to your learning. It shouldn’t be a long, slow crawl thruogh enemy territory. It should be the high speed lane to growth.
