Conspiracies and Paranoia

Conspiracies and Paranoia

I’m reading more and more from people who believe there are vast conspiracies preventing their success. The conspirators are usually the government, drug companies, the media, the United Nations, the wealthy, and so forth. (Any notion of a government which can’t keep the tiniest secret engaging in decades-long conspiracies is comical, but I digress.)

A widespread believe in conspiracies is paranoid. Here’s the definition of paranoia: a mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution, unwarranted jealousy, or exaggerated self-importance, typically elaborated into an organized system. It may be an aspect of chronic personality disorder, of drug abuse, or of a serious condition such as schizophrenia in which the person loses touch with reality.

It’s also characterized by excessive presence on social media! Facebook alone has more distortions, uneducated opinions, and outright lies than can be found in any other single source at one time. The notion, for example, that we had paved roads in 1913 without any income taxes, so we ought to be able to do it today, is astronomically stupid.

The world isn’t plotting against you, but you may be if you believe this crap. Most of us have created our success from talent and hard work. Try that first, before believing there are monsters under your bed.
